The winner of the 2026 Barrie Cox Memorial Volunteer of the Year is Leanne Hilton from Deception Bay.

Leanne is being recognised for her outstanding dedication and commitment to her Centre in the 2025/26 season. To say Leanne has gone above and beyond for her Centre is a gross understatement. Leanne stepped in this time last year to take over the Centre Manager role, when the committee identified a major misuse of Centre funds by members of the executive committee.

She has been instrumental in stabilising and transforming Deception Bay through her steady guidance and leadership. Leanne runs the centre with remarkable efficiency and friendliness. She answers every question with patience, and makes sure every family and athlete feels included and valued.

Her hard work over the past year will greatly contribute to the growth and development of the Centre. She secured funding from federal, state and local governments to have their facility redeveloped after many years of failed attempts. With her committee, she has brought the Centre back from the brink of closure to reshape it into a truly special place with an incredible community spirit.

Aside from all the work she has done behind the scenes to stabilise and turn a new page for the Centre, Leanne goes above and beyond to ensure every child has a positive and enjoyable experience in participating in athletics by fostering a supportive environment for all. As seen in her connection with the children, Leanne inspires confidence and joy each week. Her dedication, humility, and constant “How can I help?” attitude make her an outstanding asset to the Centre and an incredibly worth recipient of the Volunteer of the Year award.

Leanne’s passion, commitment and tireless efforts throughout this season make her an invaluable asset to the Centre and its future success. Little Athletics Queensland is truly thankful for what Leanne has accomplished over the past season.

Aside from this, Leanne is also a regular official on the LAQ scene, often being found in the Call Room. It is here that she creates a welcoming environment and friendly face for the athletes.
